When Cyclone Ditwah brought severe flooding across Sri Lanka’s Northern Province in early December 2025, families across Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu faced submerged roads, damaged homes and disrupted livelihoods. In response, LightUp Lanka mobilized its volunteer network, local donors and humanitarian partners to reach affected households rapidly and transparently.

Between 2 and 8 December 2025, our women-led volunteer team worked shoulder-to-shoulder with the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (Kilinochchi Branch), the University of Jaffna Thenmaradchi Student Union and the Rotaract Club of the University of Vavuniya.

In Kilinochchi District, emergency dry ration and sanitary packages reached 35 families on 2 December and a further 65 families in Vattakachchi, Mavadi and Mayavanur on 3 December through the Mavadi Community Centre.

Recognizing that infants and expectant mothers face special nutritional and hygiene risks during displacement, LightUp Lanka assembled and delivered 90 specialized baby and maternal care packages (valued at Rs. 2,500 each) across Paaliyaaru (40 families), Maanthai East Divisional Secretariat (20 families), Vanneri (15 families) and Aanaivilunthaan (15 families).

In Mullaitivu District, joint field teams navigated flood-damaged roads across five GN divisions in Visuvamadu—including Manikkapuram and Ilangopuram—and delivered emergency medical and hygiene care packs (worth over Rs. 7,000 each) to six bed-ridden elders in Vallupunam in coordination with Abiramy Elder’s Home.

Behind every packed ration bag and every field delivery stood volunteers—especially young women—whose compassion and coordination turned small acts of solidarity into immediate relief for nearly 200 households.
