Across Sri Lanka, digital spaces have become essential for education, entrepreneurship and civic participation—yet online harassment, hate speech and technology-facilitated sexual and gender-based violence (TFGBV) continue to silence women and girls.
LightUp Lanka’s work on digital safety began on the ground in Kilinochchi in 2023 through focus group discussions and three community awareness workshops conducted with the Centre for Equality and Justice (CEJ).
Facilitated by Founder Dinoja Navarathnarajah, those sessions created safe spaces for women, youth and community human rights defenders to examine how online abuse operates and how communities can respond with legal awareness and solidarity.
During the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (25 November – 10 December 2025), LightUp Lanka expanded this dialogue through a trilingual awareness campaign in Tamil, English and Sinhala under the global theme "UNiTE to End Digital Violence against All Women and Girls." Led by Senior Program Manager Nilavini Thavapalan and our facilitation team, the campaign emphasized that digital rights are human rights—and that creating safer, more inclusive online spaces requires collective responsibility across every language and community.
