Digital safety, media literacy, gender equality and protection from technology-facilitated gender-based violence are core pillars of LightUp Lanka’s community work across the Northern Province.
In August, September and November 2023, LightUp Lanka partnered with the Centre for Equality and Justice (CEJ) to conduct focus group discussions and community workshops in Kilinochchi on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), countering Online Hate Speech, and strengthening Human Rights Defenders.
In November 2024, we delivered the Learn to Discern (L2D) Media Literacy Training in Kilinochchi in collaboration with DreamSpace Academy, IREX (PRO-INFO) and USAID Sri Lanka, equipping youth to verify information and navigate digital spaces critically.
During the 2025 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, our team led a trilingual campaign (Tamil, English and Sinhala) under the global theme "UNiTE to End Digital Violence against All Women and Girls," complementing our support for the CEJ and Equality Now shadow report for Sri Lanka’s 2025 CEDAW review.
